In South Africa, older adults and their caregivers face significant challenges due to inadequate support and services. Approximately 44% of the population lives in rural areas, where healthcare facilities are scarce, with only 12% of the country’s physicians serving these communities. This disparity leads to increased travel distances and costs, further hindering access to essential care.

The social welfare system, particularly the old-age pension, has undergone reforms to address historical racial inequalities. In the early 1980s, white individuals received benefits that were ten times higher than those of their Black counterparts. By 1993, efforts were made to expand the pension to the entire population and eliminate racial disparities. However, substantial reforms have been limited since then, although the monetary value of pensions is adjusted for inflation.

Caregivers, often female family members, play a crucial role in supporting older adults. However, they frequently experience stress and health issues due to the demands of caregiving. Studies indicate that caregivers have a 63% higher risk of mortality compared to non-caregivers in the same age group, attributed to elevated stress levels.

To address these challenges, comprehensive policies are needed to enhance healthcare access, provide financial support, and offer training for caregivers. By investing in these areas, South Africa can improve the well-being of older adults and their caregivers, fostering a more inclusive society.
