The World Health Organisation’s 2025 report, “From Loneliness to Social Connection,” has placed a powerful spotlight on an often-overlooked issue in elder care: social disconnection. The report reveals that nearly one in six people globally experience loneliness, with older persons among those most at risk. Yet the impacts are far from emotional alone—social isolation and loneliness significantly increase the risk of heart disease, depression, dementia, and even premature death, with an estimated 871,000 deaths annually linked to loneliness.
At GERATEC, we’ve long believed that well-being is built on relationships. This report affirms what we know to be true in our everyday work: that social connection is not a luxury—it is a vital component of health.
The WHO urges countries to treat social connection as a public health priority and outlines clear strategies that align with GERATEC’s values—strengthening community infrastructure, fostering intergenerational relationships, reducing stigma, and building inclusive, age-friendly environments.
As South Africa faces an ageing population, we must move beyond traditional care models to embrace approaches that honour older persons as valued members of the community. Whether through shared meals, meaningful activities, or simply a caring conversation, each connection matters.
We welcome this report as a call to action. Let us respond boldly, creating environments where every older person feels seen, supported, and socially connected—because thriving in later life starts with belonging.
